LandJet Mercedes van vs driving, flying or bus: Austin to Dallas

Quick answer: Driving or riding the whole way takes about 3 to 3.5 hours on I-35, so a LandJet Mercedes van is worth considering if you want to work on the road, travel as a group or skip the drive yourself. Flying saves time in the air but adds airport time and a ground leg in Dallas, which a pre-booked transfer can cover. This is guidance, not a guaranteed saving, so check LandJet's current quote for your date.

Fleet facts checked November 2, 2026 on LandJet’s fleet page: its mobile-office Mercedes Sprinter vans list complimentary Wi-Fi and power outlets, USB and USB-C charging. LandJet does not publish hourly or per-trip rates, so ask for a quote for your date.

Who the LandJet van is for

Teams heading to a Dallas client day or event. A single vehicle lets everyone arrive together and fresh enough to present, and nobody has to find parking in central Dallas. It also removes the problem of two people flying on different airlines at different times.

Families. With children and luggage, three hours in a private vehicle can be easier than a morning of airport queues and a rental-car counter. Ask about luggage space and child seats before you book, since this varies by vehicle.

Business travellers who want to work on the way. Three hours is long enough to clear an inbox, join a call or prepare for a meeting. A flight offers less usable time once you add the airport and the ride across Dallas.

Fly instead? Choose between DAL and DFW

Flying makes sense when your schedule is tight. If you do, the Dallas airport you pick affects the rest of your day.

  • Dallas Love Field (DAL) is about 6 miles from downtown. It is the easy pick for downtown, Uptown, the Medical District and Park Cities, and it is Southwest's home base.
  • DFW International is about 20 miles from downtown, between Dallas and Fort Worth. It suits Irving, Las Colinas, Grapevine and Fort Worth, and as American Airlines' main hub it has more flight times to choose from.

Fares between the two airports can differ a lot on the same day, so search both. Once you know your landing time and airport, you can pre-book a LandJet transfer for that time: a Sprinter van for a group (ask LandJet what is available for one or two people). Our guide to booking a Mercedes S-Class airport transfer in Dallas covers DFW and DAL pick-ups in more detail.

Tips for the Austin to Dallas route

  • Know the road. I-35 runs past Round Rock and Waco, roughly the halfway point, before it splits near Hillsboro into I-35E toward Dallas and I-35W toward Fort Worth. Roadwork is common, so allow extra time for fixed appointments.
  • Avoid rush hours at both ends. Leaving Austin or arriving in Dallas on weekday mornings and late afternoons is usually the slowest.
  • Flying? Travel light. Carry-on only gets you from the plane to your car faster.
  • Keep confirmations together. If a flight changes, update the transfer time straight away.
  • Group of four or more? Compare one van for the whole trip with the cost of separate plane tickets plus ground transfers.

How to book LandJet for Austin to Dallas

  1. Decide whether you want the van door to door, or a transfer from DAL or DFW after a flight.
  2. Note your date, pick-up time and address, and how many passengers and bags you have.
  3. Open the LandJet booking page and request your quote.
  4. Read the cancellation and change terms before you pay, and ask about Wi-Fi and power if you plan to work.

Frequently asked questions

Which Dallas airport should I fly into from Austin?

Pick Dallas Love Field (DAL) if you are going to downtown Dallas, Uptown or nearby neighborhoods, because it is about 6 miles from downtown. Pick DFW if your trip is in Irving, Las Colinas, Grapevine or Fort Worth, or if DFW has the cheaper fare. Compare both airports on a fare search site before you book.

How long is the flight from Austin to Dallas?

About an hour in the air. Driving the roughly 195 miles on I-35 usually takes 3 to 3.5 hours, and longer in traffic.

Is it cheaper to book the flight and the Mercedes transfer together?

It can be, but not always. Booking the flight a few weeks ahead usually keeps the fare down, and a pre-booked transfer gives you a quoted price instead of a rideshare that may surge when you land. Compare live fares and a LandJet quote for your own date, because both change.

Is a LandJet Mercedes van worth it for the whole trip instead of flying?

It can be if you are a group or want to work on the way, because you skip the airport and share one vehicle door to door. For one traveller on a tight budget, a flight or the bus may cost less. Ask LandJet for a quote and compare it with the total cost of the alternatives.

Can I work during the ride?

LandJet describes its Mercedes vehicles as a mobile office, but amenities depend on the vehicle. Confirm Wi-Fi, power and seating for the one you are quoted, and download what you need beforehand in case mobile signal drops on rural stretches of I-35.
